COMPUTING AND ICT

Computing prepares pupils to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly transformed by access to varied and developing technology.

Pupils use ICT tools to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information responsibly, creatively and with discrimination. They learn how to employ ICT to enable rapid access to ideas and experiences from a wide range of people, communities and cultures.

Increased capability in the use of ICT promotes initiative and independent learning, with pupils being able to make informed judgements about when and where to use ICT to best effect, and to consider its implications for home and work both now and in the future.

Our Computing Intent

At St Francis Catholic Primary School, we aim to prepare our learners for their future by giving them the opportunities to gain knowledge and develop skills that will equip them for a changing digital world. We want all our pupils to be competent in the key areas of computing and ICT and able to apply their knowledge and understanding safely in real-life situations.

We want our pupils to enjoy their learning in Computing and we believe that our curriculum is sufficiently broad and balanced to promote engagement and enjoyment, in addition to providing our pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

Year 1 - Computing - Handling Data - Grouping Data & Counting

In computing, we have started to look at how computers can help us to deal with data. First, we needed to know what data is so we made a questionnaire of our favourite colours and saw how tricky it was to count how many children liked each colour. We talked about what else might help us. The children are learning that if we group objects or 'data' by similar characteristics then this can really help. In this lesson, we learned that computers group data in order to count it more easily. We tried to count how many rulers, rubbers and pencils there were. It was much easier when we put them into groups!
