St Francis Braintree

Religious Education

As a Catholic school, religious education plays a central and vital part here at St Francis. At the heart of Catholic education lies the Christian vision of the human person. This vision is expressed and explored in religious education. Therefore religious education is never simply one subject among many, but the foundation of our entire educational process.

The beliefs and values studied in catholic religious education inspire and draw together every aspect of the life of a catholic school. We are committed to classroom RE, then, because all pupils have the right to receive an overall education which will enable them, in the light of the faith of the Church, to engage with the deepest questions of life and find reasons for the hope which is within them.

Religious education is, then, the core subject in a Catholic school.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ invites all who follow its teaching to the fullness of life.

Our Religious Education Curriculum - Come and See

Religious Education at St Francis

At St Francis, we use the Come and See scheme for the basis for our Religious Education teaching.  This is recommended by the Diocese and meets the requirements of the Religious Education Curriculum Directory.

Children study three main topics each term as well as additional units of learning about World Faiths.

Religious Education is a core subject and therefore receives 10% of curriculum time.

Drama is used to help children to develop their understanding of religious stories. At Christmas and Easter, children from different phases of the school put on productions to share these important moments in the life of Jesus with our whole school community.

Year 1 - RE - Family - God Takes Care Of Me

We learned that Psalms are song prayers and that there are 150 in the Bible. We read Psalm 63, where it says God looks after us like a mother bird looks after their chicks. We thought of other baby animals that we could use in this Psalm and recreated some scenes to use with the Psalm.
