We have started to learn about the different ways scientists can sort animals. We had a go sorting some animals ourselves. Ideas were number of legs, how they move, where they live. We then looked at animals that were wild or animals that could be pets. We have now started looking at mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians.

We have been learning about our bodies in science. We have been learning about parts of the body and which body parts help us with our senses. We have played lots of games to help us explore our senses. We have been learning that all bodies and different. We also learned that good scientists ask and answer questions. We tried to predict who would have the bigger hands. Some children thought it would be the taller children, some thought it might have to do with age. We drew around our hands, measured them with cubes and then lined up in size order. Great science work, everyone!

The children have loved our topic of 'The Three Little Pigs. We have done lots of tests, explored and investigated and were even engineers. We have made kites and explored the ways the wind changes directions and was able to 'blow' the different houses down in the story. We then had a go at designing and making our own houses and used a hairdryer to see if they would actually 'blow' down.

Curly Wurly Championship 2024 with Year 2 17th Jul 2024

Today was the end of our 'Changing Shape' materials topic. We ended the topic with the Curly Wurly stretch challenge. We knew that a child on Explorify had managed to stretch her Curly Wurly to about 90cm and that the world record was over 400cm!! We had 3 minutes each to stretch the toffee as far as we could. Our results were: Joint 3rd with 123cm Kaylee and Winner. 2nd place was Jane with 126 cm and in 1st place was Nikodem with an impressive 134cm. Well done to everyone who took part.

Year 2 received a letter from the Science Laboratory of Super Heros asking them to work out the best fabric to design a new outfir for Elastagirl. After discussions last week it was time to put their ideas into practice this week by carrying out their investigations. We got some very good results that we will be tabulating this week and sending our reply and answers to the Laboratory

We have been learning all about plants. We have spent a lot of time outside finding common wild and garden plants. We have also been learning about trees. We learned the words deciduous and evergreen and what they meant. We have been looking at the leaves and the bark of trees to help us identify them. We had a lovely calm time drawing some trees on the field, making sure we could identify the trunk, branches and leaves.

To begin our unit of learning, the children learned that edible parts of plants are called vegetables. We learned that if the edible part has a seed, it is also a fruit. We used this new learning to look at different edible plants and decided if they were fruits or non-fruits. We then looked at where on the plant vegetables and fruits grow. We deduced that fruits always grow above ground. This also linked nicely with our learning in science about parts of plants. We loved thinking that we could eat every part of different plants!

Today we set up our plastic bag green houses and began our journey of growing Broad Bean. First of all we talked about why seeds are important. We used the book ‘Christopher Nibble’ by Charlotte Middleton which is about a guinea pig and his friends and family who eat too many dandelions and end up having to eat chewy cabbage as the dandelions run out. Christopher saves the day by looking after the seeds from the one plant that is left and growing many dandelions from them.

Year 1 have been learning all about the UK and the typical weather that we have in different seasons. We applied all of our knowledge so far and created weather reports for each other! We made our own maps, labelling the countries. We then described the weather in different parts of the UK and even tried to use our new knowledge of North, South, East and West! It was great fun. Miss Harmer visits a wonderful owl sanctuary in Norfolk each Easter where she is able to get some owl pellets. The owl pellets were disinfected this morning and then we put on our masks and gloves before exploring the pellets and finding out what the owls had eaten. We found ribs, leg bones, teeth and fur. The children were fascinated and the experience has certainly helped them with their learning about simple food chains.

Year 2 have been talking about animals and their habitats and how an animal is best suited for different habitats. We have discussed how animals such as polar bears, penguins, camels and monkeys are all suited to different habitats. We have looked at The Sahara and Antarctica and found out why they are both deserts. We then used addresses such as 'Igloo Avenue, Ice Cap Ridge, Arctic Way' to decide which habitat was being describe before making the habitat out of boxes and craft material. d

This half term, we are learning about biology. We are starting to understand how scientists sort living things. We have been looking at sorting into groups based on characteristics (mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians) and also diet (omnivore, herbivore, carnivore). We sorted out different mammals into our own groups and explained how we had sorted them.

The children have been looking at the story of 'The Gingerbread man' In the story the Gingerbread man has to cross a river, so we decided to test different types of water temperatures and types to see which would dissolve the Gingerbread man the quickest. We tested three different samples; one was cold muddy water to represent the river, then we used cold salty water to represent the sea and then we used warm water to represent a bath. The children then had to predict what might happen in each pot and then we tested them.

Those naughty Evil Peas were at it again in Year 1 - they had frozen all the vegetables in ice! We looked at water and ice and tried to describe what they were like. We then used our science brains to make a plan to free the vegetables! We decided to pour warm water over the ice, to use a hairdryer and to smash the ice off! We were so happy to help our veggie friends!

The children have been learning about the story of 'The Three Little Pigs'. We tested different materials to see which ones were waterproof and if used for a roof would keep the pigs dry. The children then went off to make their own houses and test them themselves.
